The 1st Generation
The first generation of computers were made in 1945 to 1959. They were large, expensive, and started out by using electro-mechanical relays. They can be characterized by their use of vacuum tubes. A vacuum tube is an electronic device that controls the flow of electrons in a vacuum. The first commercial digital computer was considered to be the UNIVAC, which was invented by the Eckert- Mauchly Computer Corporation. The computers used in this generation required lots of space and electricity, and heat. They also burn out very quickly because of the vast number of tubes being used.
